Okay so can I just feed my horse any grass hay? There are many types of hay you can use to feed your horses. They come in different mixes and qualities. You want to feed the best quality hay you can afford. Some main things to avoid is dusty and moldy hay. Mold and dust can cause respiratory problems for your horse. If you have to feed dusty hay, you can try soaking/spraying it first. Other things to look out for is blister beetles, thistles, and fox tails. Don't be surprise what you might find in some hay, even an old shoe.
Webster's Burger in Clements, a few miles down from Lockeford Meats, makes some of tastiest burgers. Everything is well price and the menu has a large variety of burgers.Don't forget the floats and shakes.

What I look for in a horse. The first is conformation. The next thing I look for is pedigree. Third, does the horse have a good mind. Other things I look for is personality and good feet. Although stallions are dollar valued higher than mares, the mares have more influence than the sires.
Here is the Sire of "Princess Sails" (my mare quarter horse)
Conformation: Important to match the balance of your horse for the job you need him to perform. A well balance horse will out perform a poorly put together horse and will be less likely to get injured.
Pedigree: Knowing your horses pedigree gives you a better idea about your horses performance capability.
Mind: If your horse has a good mind he/she will be more trainable.

My daughter did a report on the Gyrfalcon and came across some real nice pictures I would like to share. I don't own these photos.
Gyrfalcons are being smuggle out Russia and shipped to the Middle East for falconry. They go for $30,000 to $50,000 on the black market. It reflects the money that is available in the region and the demand for such prize birds. Back in medieval times Gyrfalcons were reserve only for Kings.
Gyrfalcons have three morph colors; grey, black, and white.
Peregrine Falcons are known to be the fasted diving vertically but Gyrfalcons are known to fly faster horizontally.

Well you if you have livestock you need a dog. This here is Ringo (Zues) a 15 month old Blue Heeler. I have owned German Shepherd Imports, a German Pointer, and a Border Collie, he has to be the smartest of them all. It is as if he speaks english, especially for such a young dog. Most dogs don't mature until they are at least 2 years old. Don't let him fool you though he is one aggressive taz mania devil.
Yes that would be a 4 lbs free ranged chicken, at $6.00 per lbs, from a local farm here in Vacaville, CA. (I will post more about this later)

Well I am sure most of you have seen an increase in beef prices this past year. If you are not paying attention than you should. I won't get into to much details on this post but please read this article in the Washington Post about how the drought is effecting cattle ranchers in Texas. The losses will transfer to more demand for butcher cattle and less cows producing calves for next year.
Washington Post
Why do we still use horses? Well have you ever tried doing a 3 point turn in a coral while a bull is charging straight for you? The horse can get in to areas where an ATV can't, this holds true in tough terrain. How about roping cattle off an ATV?
Those are some of the obvious reasons. Cattle is more gentle around horses than ATVs. You can ride right up to the herd without spooking the cattle. You'll need to get right up to the herd to spot sick cattle and sort them out to be doctored.

No not that kid. Alfalfa is the number three value crop behind corn and soybean. Why is alfalfa so important you might ask. Alfalfa is a high nutritional forage. Alfalfa is a main source of feed for milk cows. Other importance feed source for horses, cattle, goats, and sheep.
Swather cutting alfalfa field |
Holstein Cow (Dairy Cow) |
Well we have seen over 40% increase of Alfalfa prices per ton this past year. Due to droughts and demand from over seas. Milk is in demand in countries like China and Japan, and alfalfa is the most efficient feed for dairy cows. The local horse keepers are seeing premium pricing for alfalfa bales, Alfalfa bales have gone up from $9 to $16. Local dairy farmers are substituting what they can to bring down their feed cost.
Alfalfa Bales |
For myself, I have been feeding mostly 4-way oat mix hay. I had purchase about 30 bales for about $12 a bale over the summer. The same stuff is currently being sold for $16 per bale. Every horse keeper has his/her own feed management program.

Horsemanship is one of the most challenging skills I have tried to master. It is like a game of chess and sometimes your opponent doesn't play by the rules, okay how about never. Every horse is different and presents different challenges. (more about this later)
People often ask how does a horse know you are green (beginner)? Horses can feel the strength in your legs. Most green riders have weaker leg muscles. Also when you send the horse mix singles constantly he is going to know that you don't know what you are doing. There are other factors but those are two that gave me away when I first started to ride.
Very subtle movements are felt by the horse, like looking over your shoulders. Your horses will reflect your horsemanship skills or lack of.

It's the end of 2011 and I want to spend some time to reflect on investments opportunities I have been involved with and what we plan to invest in the upcoming year.
Well, we'll continue to invest in the tried and true of small investment properties in Sacramento and the surrounding areas. We'll purchase the beat up properties (usually REOs and Short Sales), give them some TLC and push them back out to the market for a $10K NET profit or about $250/month NET Cash Flow. We usually sell these properties to first time home buyers and investors who are looking for turn-key properties that they can raise a family or put tenants in for a cash flow.
Other types of properties that we plan to focus on will be Agricultural and Ranch Properties. The simple reason is the world's population is currently over 7 billion so the demand for food will continue to grow since commodity prices will continue to rise. Therefore, we can see that investing in commercial ranches will be a great investment for the future.
If you are still not convinced and you think I am just creating this made up doom and gloom, you should read these articles from USA Today and National Geographic about the unsustainability of our population growth:
1. http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/story/2011-10-30/world-population-hits-seven-billion/51007670/1
2. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/01/seven-billion/kunzig-text
Until Next Time...
Sometimes the cooking is done right and you wonder why you don't cook more often. These are country style chicken tenders made with free range chicken breast dipped in panko bread crumbs (Japanese). Panko bread is the same stuff they use at Japanese restaurants for tempura shrimp.

My friend sent over these tasty pictures of the crayfish from the delta. He said the claws were meaty but the tails seem a bit on the skinny side. It may be due to the season. Looks good I tell ya.

Today a friend and I went to have lunch in Galt, CA at our favorite taco truck. It is on the corner of Twin Cities Road and Highway 99. I get the usual beef taco. He is a lot braver and orders the tongue and tripe taco. They are reasonable price at $1.25 per taco. The menu also include head taco, I guess they are referring to meet from the head of a cow. We will have to try that next time. This truck offers fried jalapenos and their tacos are the tastiest in the area.
Today a trailer pulled in with a boat. It looked to have a few crayfish cages so I decided to see if they caught any. It turns out this is the end of the season. He showed us his catch and we offered to buy some. These look very bright and healthy. Someone is going to have some good eating tonight.

This here is the Cattleman's Livestock Market in Galt, CA. You have some of the nicest people here at CLM and the food is pretty good. We usually get breakfast here and head to the taco truck for lunch. Cattle is brought here on Wednesday and Thursday to be auction off. On weekends they usually have special sales.
This is the catwalk in the sale yard. This is where you can view the cattle inventory for the day. They run singles through first and then pairs, steers, and heifers. It smells like cows here and there is a lot of mooing. Once in a while you'll see a cow jump the 6 foot fences.

So I ran across this add about 20 guinea fowls for sale. It reads "These are working birds/pets - not for meat". I guess there is a working guinea fowl union somewhere that doesn't allow these birds to be stir fry. Sure promise I won't eat em'.
What do you guys think? Does the owner have the right to tell you not to eat these birds. I mean think about it. After laying eggs and serving it's purpose, the best poultry management practices would be to consume these meat birds. Oh wait they are protected!

This was the other long horn steer that we picked up from CLM. This guy stood 6 feet at the shoulders. He was sent off to Fresno and lived happily ever after. That would had made a nice rug.

This past weekend A good friend of mine got together and went out hawking for cotton tail rabbits. We got skunked but it was successful because the passage hawk flew back to the glove. It was beautiful sight to see the hawk circle around us as we flushed the cotton tails out of the brush.
This here (below) is a Harris Hawk. He just got done with his meal. Females are more commonly use for falconry because they are bigger than males and can take down larger preys. Harris hawks are very nimble and agile in brush terrain.

Cattle has to be weigh in to be sold or for record keeping. Part of the best practices of cattle management at our feedlot. Remember about cattle stress and moving them around to much, well if you have 30 heads of cattle weighing in and they lost 3 lbs each you just lost 90 lbs at $1.00 is about $90.00 today because you implied bad management practices or feed schedule. I can tell you all about that in another post. These scales are in the ground and are pretty sophisticated. I can assure you that every top operation ranch has one. Balancing these babies are a must as rain, dirt, and water can effect your real numbers. In some cases you just drive your trailer righ on it and weigh them in.

Yes we are talking about Cache Creek Casino her in Northern California. Four longhorn steers ended up at CLM here in Galt. We were lucky enough to buy 3 of the 4 heads. This was the last one we kept. They weigh in about an average 1700 lbs and stood 6 feet at the shoulders. They were very gentle but intimidating because they all had 4 foot horns. Those lawn ornaments in the background are Angus bulls.

Have you ever herd of a feedlot or know what one looks like? I haven't either until my ealry years as a small time rancher. It is where you take the animals to feed in a lot, make sense. It usually is a setup where you sort animals out and feed then daily to get gain in them. People usually take animals to feed lot to fatten them up before butcher or selling them off. Remember cattle is sold per by the pounds so every pound counts.

This picture here was taken at BFC (Bordon Feed Company) out in Herald, CA. These were 600 lbs calves being ship off to market.
I spent a day with Mr. Whittle, a modern day cattle rancher up in Angels Camp, CA. He is a third generation rancher and his family has been in Angels Camp since 1864. They were one of the first families to settle there. Today they ranch over 20,000 acres of private and public lands. We spent today evaluating the pasture grass and opening gates to greener pastures for the cows. Now when we say cow in ranch country we are referring to momma cows. Male cows are called "bulls" and castrated males are called "steers", Young females who have not calved are called "heifers". We are cover about 800 acres or so today on horseback and this country is breath taking.
Some of you may wonder why we still us horses. It's really a lifestyle and it is less stressful for the cattle. Yes animals have stress too. When that happens they don't gain as well and it disrupts everything. So that means you wouldn't want a coyote chasing your cattle all day because they will in fact lose pounds and that can be the difference between cost and returns per animal. Like they say we like happy California cows.
This school house has been here since 1864. It is one of the oldest structures here on the ranch.

Well if I am going to be a Cowboy I need a horse. This here is my horse, her name is Princess Sails. She is a American Quarter Horse. Her daddy was the no other than Topsail Cody, a hall of fame NRHA stallion. She is 9 years old and has a star on her forehead. No sock, I don't like socks (socks are the white coloring on their feet). I've had her for half a year now and she has been a dream horse. She is actually my third horse I have owned. More about her later ... .

What is Cash Milk? Let me see, how to make cash in milk products? Nope. Well you see a friend said to me that we should stop talking and start writing about our experience and where we are going. It made sense because most of our friends did not have the luxury to take time off work to experience life the way we did. We don't have such a grand life or anything but we tend to experiment with what we believe in. You could say we a just two average Americans trying to find our way in this depress market. The market is not really depress but we will touch up on that later.
So what is Cash Milk. Cash Milk is a blog about agriculture and land. The last American frontier. You see I am also a real estate consultant and I am betting all my marbles on agriculture properties. Why do I say that. It is because America is for sale and everyone is buying or are they? The last frontier is not going to be about mineral and oils but more so about hunger. I could be wrong, but at least I know I won't be starving.
For example, we are seeing an increase of the prices of produces and commodities. We saw average beef prices go from $.80 to $1.40 in less than 2 years. As fuel prices jump, those cost trickle all the way down to your steak dinner. And so the purpose of this blog is to inform you about these cause and effect. The correlation between two products on different end of the spectrum. So what are we waiting for ... start blogging!
